Have you ever eaten something at a restaurant or a friend’s house and wow!  There’s something in the dish or dessert that really gives it more flavor, more sweetness or spice.

You want to know, “What is the secret ingredient that makes all the difference in this?”

Some cooks will let you in on the secret and some won’t.  I’ll let you in on this secret.  Connecting with your life purpose and taking action on it will be the sweetness and spice of your life.

If your life is feeling flat, routine and uninspiring it could very well be that your Inner Being is giving you a message.  You have a purpose inside of you.  There is something you were born to do.  That something will light you up and fulfill you.  It will feel joyful! And best of all, it will make a contribution in some way to others, animals, or the earth.

It doesn’t need to be a big thing.  You don’t need to start organizations —unless that would bring you joy.  It may involve a career change or it may not.  Purpose can be expressed through the work you do, but can also be  something outside of work.

People ask me if you can have more than one life purpose.

The answer is yes, you can.  Your purpose may involve how you show up for your children or an aging parent.  Perhaps you have a cause you care about and become a volunteer.  At the same time, your career can be about work that is meaningful and purposeful to you.

You may engage in one purpose at a time that shifts as you grow through life.  Think about how your tastes have changed since you were a child.  Your purpose can change completely or simply alter as well. It will be about what interests you, and as you move through life that can change.

Tips For Connecting With Your Purpose:

Your purpose is inside of you, so look within.  Carve out some time and find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Take a few deep breaths to relax yourself, and ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you love to do?
  • When are you the happiest?
  • What skills have you developed that you enjoy using?
  • What natural talents do you have?
  • What personality preferences do you have? (Do you like being inside or outside, collaborating with others or working alone, etc.)
  • What makes time seem to slip by?
  • If your life were ideal, what would that look like?
  • What are your top values?

Don’t censor any of your answers.  Just enjoy the flow.  Write out your answers and let them sit for a few days.  Then, go back and review them.  Has anything changed? Is there anything you’d like to add?

If you get stuck

If you’re not sure how to answer these questions, it can be of value to look at what is not working in your life right now.  What would you like to experience instead?

Make a list of the things you don’t like or aren’t really working for you. Then go through that list and say to yourself, “Well, I don’t want that, so what DO I want?”  Write your answers down.  Then have a look at your new list.  Doing this uses the contrast (what you don’t like) in your life to bring clarity for what you’d like to create. You now have a list of what you’d like your life to look like! Remember your life purpose is the secret ingredient that adds zest to your life!

So delve into exploring your purpose and enjoying the secret ingredient that spices up your life while making your Divine contribution!
